Yesterday, I recieved two belated Christmas gifts from T.'s parents:
When we were visiting them last Christmas, I got to sit at the computer and order three knitting books as presents. The first two arrived yesterday and I'm so happy with them! First, it's the Folk Hats book by Vicki Square. This book is full of unusual hats, a lot of them are felted. The second is Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush. Now I own all Nancy's books again! This looks like a great sock book, especially if you like solid colored socks with nice textured patterns. The third book is still on its way...
Deze boeken heb ik gekregen als kerstkado van T.'s ouders. Toen we met kerst bij hun op bezoek waren, mocht ik achter de computer gaan zitten en drie breiboeken bestellen. Gisteren kwamen de eerste twee, ik ben er ontzettend blij mee! Het eerste boek is Folk Hats van Vicki Square. Dit is een boek met een heleboel ongewone hoofddeksels, veel ervan zijn vervilt. Het tweede boek is Knitting Vintage Socks van Nancy Bush. Nu heb ik weer al haar boeken! Het boek ziet er gewelig uit, vooral als je van effen sokken houdt met mooie stekenpatroontjes. Het derde boek is nog onderweg....
But that wasn't all that came in the mail. When I wrote about Estonian mittens on the last days of 2005, I was pointed to the pattern books by Aino Praakli. I did some searching and found them on the site of an Estonian online bookshop, Krisostomus. So I ordered them there, and € 12.30 and 10 days later, I am the proud owner of these beauties:
Maar dat was nog niet alles wat de postbode bracht. Toen ik eind vorig jaar schreef over Estlandse wanten, wees iemand me op de patronenboeken van Aino Praakli. Na wat zoeken kwam ik ze tegen op de site van een online Estlandse boekwinkel, Krisostomus. Ik heb ze meteen besteld, en € 12,30 en 10 dagen later ben ik de trotse bezitter van deze juweeltjes:

I haven't had time to really check them out, but they look very promising! I'll tell you more about all the books when I have taken a good look at them.
Ik heb er nog niet echt goed naar kunnen kijken, maar ze zien er veelbelovend uit! Ik zal meer vertellen over al deze boeken als ik ze goed heb bekeken.
In the mean time, I'm happily knitting away on the second Herringbone Glove.
Ondertussen ben ik vrolijk aan het doorbreien aan de tweede Herringbone Glove.
I hope to finish them this weekend. And if anyone wants to try these: if you've knitted gloves before, these aren't very difficult, I would say, even if the pattern is in Japanese. I'd be glad to try to help out anyone who gets stuck along the way.
Ik hoop dat ik ze dit weekend af krijg. En als iemand dit patroon wil proberen: als je al eens eerder handschoenen hebt gebreid, zijn deze niet erg moeilijk, zelfs al is het patroon in het Japans. Ik wil iedereen die halverwege vast komt te zitten, met alle plezier proberen weer op gang te helpen.

Those gloves are amazing. I took a look at the pattern. You are right, it doesn't look too bad. Even to this novice glove knitter and chart reader.

The gloves are lovely! I'm not sure if I'm ready to brave them but your progress is sure making me want to try! Yes, I will be most interested in your opinion on the Aino Praakli books.

Wow, the Estonian mitten book looks wonderful! These types of mittens are on my "one day" list.

I love the herringbone gloves, and even though I'm not too experienced at either fair isle or knitting gloves I took a go at them. I'm now almost finished with the first glove and it looks great (although not as even as yours:). Please do give your opinion on the Estonian knitting books. I'm visiting Estonia in March so I might just get them for myself.

Now that's a nice santa! You can't send him this way? I would have absolutly nooooo problem ordering three books. Except maybe to decide which three... But the Nancy Bush is definatley on my wish list.

en helemaal super, nu je ook in het nederlands schrijft.
ik kon het redelijk volgen, maar nu nog beter.
ik breidde veel uit tijdschriften ed., maar ben nu ook op orientatie, naar verschillende boeken.
wat zul je veel leesplezier hebben, de komende tijd.

the gloves are great!
Writing everything in two languages is time-consuming, isn't it? So I recently mostly only write in english only... but I love to read what you write in dutch and see how much I understand and doublecheck with the english text. It is just the spoken dutch that seems so hard to understand ;-)))

I am glad finding your page and find out i am not the only one who love to make socks. I finished my 3th pair since 3 january... so i am going like the firemen! I even find a desent shop nearby. I am as happy as it could be. Here in France there are a lot of nice magazines to get new ideas. Did you made this internet page yourself?

I love those gloves. I keep coming back for globe update pics. They are beautiful. I'm thinking about getting that Nancy Bush book. You might have talked me into it!

Ik zag dat je de vingers had veranderd. ik brei al 28jaar handschoenen naar een patroon, daar heeft ieder vinger een eigen lengte(kijk maar naar je hand) en eigen dikte. Ook is het belangrijk voor de pasform dat de duim nit precies in het mitten zit maar een klein beetje naar onderen, dus echt een linker en rechter maken.Ik vind het hele leuke blog,kom erop via de sokken groep op yahoo

I've heard that those Estonian books are amazing. Are they easy enough to "read" if you are familiar with the basics of mitten-making?
You have inspired me to take another look at the herringbone glove pattern. One day I ran it through Babelfish, or maybe it was the Google translator, and the results were really, really funny. :-)

You are amazing!! Because of your talented knitting and your blog, I have discovered that I love knitting folk mittens. Maybe one day, after I become MUCH better, I will attempt to knit the Herrinbone gloves. Happy Knitting!
