FO report
I really don't know why it took me almost exactly one year to finish these, but here they are:

The Over-the-knee socks from Handknit Holidays, in all their glory. I'll create a page for them in the finished items album soon, with all the details and hopefully a modelled picture. So far, I think of them more as fun things to knit, rather than practical to wear, because they fall down after taking only a few steps. Oh well, I suppose I could wear them lying on the couch or something, at least they are nice and warm.
Then all of a sudden, I felt the urge to do something with the almost complete ball of Noro Kureyon I had lying around. I decided to combine it with some unidentified solid blue yarn from my stash.

This is the result. I'm not happy with it, I think the blue clashes too much with the reds. Neither of them benefits, I think. Instead, I think I will look for a different solid (perhaps a lighter red shade) at the SnB-day on Saturday in Rotterdam. This attempt will be frogged.
Lots of news on the books/magazines front! First of all, the new Marie Claire Idées arrived in the stores.

I can't say enough good things about this French magazine, I just love it. And this issue has a number of things to knit:

The magazine is filled with inspiration, as always. I have a big pile of back issues that I keep leafing through time after time, just to get inspired.
Just as inspirational is this book I got from ebay (vendor victory_555):

It's called Gloves of Lithuania Minor. I'll do a more thourough presentation of this book soon (I hope), but it looks promising. The text is both in English and Lithuanian. It consists of two studies done on gloves in a certain part of Lithuania. One of them was done in 1940 (with pictures taken at that time, see the right image).

I've read a couple of pages so far, and it is very interesting, lots of history and background information. More about this book later!
And wonder of wonders: I got two books from De Slegte, a bookshop that sells secondhand and publisher's leftovers. I rarely find any interesting knitting books there, but last week, I got lucky. Take a look:

To the left is Knitting for peace, a book about knitting for charity. And to the right is Weekend Knitting. Am I lucky or what?

I love the colour of your over-the-knee-socks. They look lovely. And yes, I bought Marie Claire Hiver in Spain; it is superbe! Gloves of Lithuania Minor looks terrific too and next week I have a short holiday and one of the things is going to De Slegte. Yes.

Yes you are lucky. I love the Weekend Knitting book. I have been doing the Pie Wedge shawl from that for about 2 years now? Have the wedge done, just need to add the lace edging.

Your over-the-knee socks are lovely. Purple is great.

Oh yes Saartje, you are lucky!!!!
Well, first of all, I must say: The Over-the-knee socks...WOW...WOW...WOW!!!! So wonderful, so nice in color. I wish, I have the same... So I will knit them, I have the pattern book *Handknit Holidays*also, and I hope I can do this knitwork. I`ve knitting knee socks for my walk with my dog Oscar, you know. This socks keep my feet warm and they never fall down, like the over-the-knee-socks. I think, your socks are romatic and not for every day, but they are fantastic.
So I like the blue/red Scarf very much. I dont think so, the blue clashes too much with the reds. I like it!!
Thanks to show us so many things about pattern books and another lot of things. I´m very happy to read your Blog!! It`s always an inspiration for me!

Hi, wow, you've found great books, the one about the mittens looks GREAT.
And the socks: looks marvelous (the colour is also very nice). See you saturday!

Your socks look great-I love that pattern. Have you thought about sewing elastic in the top so they stay up?
I can't wait to hear about the book about Lithuanian gloves-it looks good.

Knap werk zeg! Wat een schatten heb je kunnen bemachtigen. Je kunt weer even vooruit.

I want to see the over-the-knee socks modeled! The color you chose is gorgeous. That glove book looks fun also - I've been buying vintage glove knitting books at Vintage Knits (http://www.vintageknits.com) but have never thought of checking Ebay.

Hi Saartje!
This is the first time I visit your blog and I must say you have a nice background here. Do you like this pattern a lot? Just asking coz here in Finland you can buy even wellingtons, baby bottles, set of dishes, pens and leaflet with this same "Unikko" pattern...Just remembered, that I have seen somewhere on some magazine white knitted socks with these flowers on the ankle part:)
I like those blue-red socks (?) you´re making, I find the colour combination funny;-)

The mitten book looks like a real treasure! :-)
I'm sorry to hear that the socks aren't terribly functional. I've been wanting to knit them, but now I think I will try to adapt the pattern into a below-the-knee sock instead.

Oh, the socks are lovely (elastic thread run through the ribbing might help), and I *must* know more about the glove book!
Oh, and personally I like the red and blue, but it might be a monitor thing.

I, too, love Marie Claire Idees! To be honest I don't often make something directly from the magazine, but their style is so beautiful and inspiring. That Lithuanian book looks great, too.

Hallo Saartje,
