Wow!

First of all: thank you all so much for your congratulations and best wishes! I couldn't have imagined so many of you taking the time to write, so I'm completely, but happily, overwhelmed. So far, everything is going fine with the little one, so let's hope it stays that way.

Of course, I will be knitting some baby things, but not exclusively, I can tell you. I like making small things, but I don't enjoy all the seaming etc. involved. For example these baby shoes from Simple knits for cherished babies:

Baby_shoes.jpg

They're a breeze to knit, but then you have to sew almost all of the sole to the upper part and close the back seam. I'm used to socks and mittens, where you only have to weave in a few ends and then you're done. Do you know what I mean? So I will be knitting some other stuff too, besides these baby things. Of course, if you know about some clever patterns for cute baby knits with a minimal amount of finishing, please let me know!

I did find a pattern like that myself in the Garnstudio pattern database. It's a cardigan, knit sideways, in 100% alpaca.

The English pattern is here, voor de Nederlandse versie klik hier. I got the yarn at the needle craft fair in Zwolle last weekend. Because we're still very busy moving, I couldn't afford to spend much time at the fair. I did have a great time, and managed to buy some lovely yarn. Apart from the Drops Alpaca shown above, I got this at Klazien's booth:

Some silkwool I need to finish the Pea Pod Baby Cardigan (link to pdf) and some more Arwetta sock yarn.

And at the Storm op Zolder, I got an undyed skein of organic Blue Face Leicester sock yarn. It's so soft!

In the meanwhile, as I mentioned, The Move is still taking most of my time. I'm really fed up with it by now, I just want to feel settled again... At least I got the chance to enjoy the sunrise at our new place a couple of times already, when the weather was good.

Succes verder met the big move!

ohhh the Arwetta is the softest yarn ever! I use it for baby-stuff and just made a scarf for my hubby with it - he doesn't like anything that could be thought of as "might be itchy in some freak moment" *grins*
The booties and sweater looks so cute! love it!

I agree, sometimes baby footwear is much too finishing-intensive for its own good. I made these circular booties long ago, virtually no finishing: http://megan.cc/SeamlessBootee/ There's a top down and a toe up version. They looked very sweet in Koigu.

I hope you continue to feel well! :)

*gasp* The view is gorgeous! And belated congratulations!!

The BFL sock yarn looks and sounds absolutely divine.. I do hope you make something luscious for yourself with it.

That sunrise picture is so beautiful! Great job on the baby booties, they're adorable! I'm not sure where to find any patterns offhand, but I do know there are some baby sweaters (like cardigans) that are knit up to the armholes in one piece, then you do the back and the arms (you just have to sew the arms on), and maybe a collar if the pattern calls for one. I like the minimal amount of seaming as well, so I tend to make a lot of socks or mittens - or baby items because even if you have to sew sides and arms, there isn't as much sewing as there would be on an adult sized sweater.

That Garnsstudio's garter stich jacket is so nice. I've made two of them (though not posted yet) in nice retro colors.
What is funny is that I tried to buy the exact colours you're using, but my mom who was with me in the LYS (and paying my yarns...) said that babies don't use violets and purples.
Ha! I have to show this to her.

Here is a wonderful pattern for baby booties that I love to make with the sock yarn leftover from an adult pair:

easy, and no seaming at all.
Enjoy!

Hoi Saartje,

The sunrise is stunning!

I have been curious to look as sweaters knit sideways, thank you for linking to the pattern. It seems like it would be a simple way to make vertical stripes, but maybe I say "simple" because I have not read it yet!

Thanks voor the link to the pattern, I like baby pattern without something to sew too !

Dear Saartje,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You'll definitely have the best dressed baby in Europe.

Saartje,

Try Elizabeth Zimmermann's baby jacket from The Knitter's Almanac. I think it's one of the February projects. There is NO seaming involved (she does the sleeves flat, but you can very easily do them in the round), and the jacket is really adorable and well-designed. I've knit two now, one in the original lace pattern she gives and one with a plain Stocking St body.

She also has other baby projects in the same chapter.

Another suggestion: Baby socks with eyelets at the ankle to weave a small strap through - so you can bind them lightly. Same amount of finishing as adult socks. These were the only items that would stay on my babies' feet. Can be made just as cute as booties...

Congratulations Saartje! I love these booties because they have absolutely no seaming. I'm going to try modifying other bootie patterns according to this formula:

I have an Elizabeth Zimmerman recommendation as well. I am currently working on her Baby Surprise Jacket from The Opinionated Knitter, although there may be a single pattern available as well from Schoolhouse Press. Both this sweater and the February sweater mentioned above can be viewed at Zimmermania blog. Then there is a nice Tomten sweater for later on, or I guess that could be a baby sweater as well. Come to think of it I did make that one (from Knitting Without Tears) with baby yarn for my older daughter (25 years ago). Congratulations!

oooh, those new knits look so cozy and sweet. glad you are feeling well and settling into your new home.

Congratulations on your upcoming little one! Isn't it an exciting journey? I'm due in July and it's been an incredible experince so far.

I have so many things I want to knit, but I'm starting with a Debbie Bliss alphabet blanket (the lace one). I'll definitely be making a baby surprise jacket and the February baby sweater (from Knitter's Almanac), too. The list is actually endless. :)

Dear Saartje,

Congratulations with your pregnancy and with your new home. Wish you good luck in Groningen.
I agree with the time spending seeming. Tip: try velted baby shoes. Beautifull, quickly, with a perfect fit (you use the feet of the baby to shape them) and without a stiff seam.

Rowan has a new book in the Royal Classic Collection which might be interesting for you. "Classic mother and baby". I think you like the cardigan in A- model in gartner stitch with a cabled collar. I expect its pleasant to wear during pregnancy and after the delivery. There are also some beautifull jumpers and cardigans for babies in it. (though some of them are quite old-fashioned). I saw the book at Modilaine in Utrecht. wish you all the best
Bernadette

That's wonderful news (that I didn't discover in your last post - because shame on me I didn't read to the very end..;-))congratulations!
The view from your apartment is fantastic! - I wish you good luck in Groningen - a great town that I visited MANY years ago..
The little slippers are just too cute!
