Knitting mittens
I'm knitting a pair of mittens from the Norwegian book Håndplagg til bunader og folkedrakter. This book is really gorgeous, it has 300 pages filled with patterns traditional handcoverings from Norway (gloves, mittens and wrist warmers), all replicas of museum pieces. Francesca has a blog entry with some pictures from the book.
Here is a glimpse of the mittens in progress:
These mittens are from Sør-Varanger, way up in the north of Norway. I would love to visit there, but it's 3,063 km according to Google Maps. Maybe someday....
They knit up really fast because of the gauge of 25 st to 10 cm (6.25 spi). Most patterns in the book have gauges of 35-40 st to 10 cm (8.75-10 spi). I'm not afraid of a small gauge, but it's nice to be able to finish something quickly every now and then. Although it's not like we really need mittens over here right now, with temperatures of around 7C/45F. And besides, they're just an addition to the stash of mittens I've made before... I like having a choice!

Your mittens are absolutely wonderful! I love the simple grey pair on the end with the beautiful embroidery. That's a skill I would love to learn myself.
And if you could stop to visit Lene in Finland first, getting to the uppermost reaches of Norway might not be so hard. ;-)

As usual - very cool post. The mittens are really cool. I especially like that they are based on museum pieces. When they're finished, will you post any more info on the history of those mittens? You should!
Love the window mittens. They're lovely!
PS. I'm starting my first pair of Selbu mitts!

Breigroeten, Ellen.

Love the mittens, Saartje! You have inspired me to gather mine up for a "group photo" to post on my blog. I like having choices also.
Would you try to give us a phonetic explanation on how to pronounce your name? I would like to say it in my mind even though I may never use it. I am only guessing that it might be "Sort-yay" but that is just a wild guess.
Posted by: Paula at January 19, 2008 8:46 PM
I'm lost for words. You knit things from all over the world, and all so beautiful; Japan, Norway. Do you translate yourself the patterns from the books or are you a good chartreader?
It's not nice to say, but I would wish you a cold winter, so you can use those mittens/gloves ALL the time. They deserve it!
Maybe some small ones for your little girl?
Posted by: Monique at January 19, 2008 11:16 PM

Hi Saartje:
Greetings from Alabama. I came across your website from a "Knit Night" session at our local knit shop (In The Making). My parents are both Dutch. My extended family lives in Den Haag, Zoetermeer, Zevenaar and Heeze. I am coming over for my annual visit in May with my sister. I speak Dutch, can read Dutch but cannot write Dutch that well. I know a few words but find it easier to email in English but have no problems reading Dutch. With each visit to Nederland, I always purchase the Dutch knitting magazines. I have been knitting since age 13. My Tante Dolly and mother taught me to knit and I am addicted to it. Where exactly do you live? I love your booties pattern and will be making those for a friend who has just had a baby. I know she will love them. Good to talk with you.

I agree, sometimes it's satisfying to knit for weeks and see a great creation, but often everyday joy comes also from small and fast knitting!

Hoi Saarje.
